Signs You’re Working With a Reputable Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Breeder

If you’ve fallen in love with those big eyes, velvety ears, and sweet nature of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, you’re not alone.  These pups are truly beloved! However, before you welcome a Cavalier dog into your home, it’s crucial to find a breeder who truly puts the health, happiness, and quality of life of their dogs first. Here’s how to know you’re on the right track.

Health Testing Should Be Expected

A reputable breeder makes sure all breeding dogs should be screened for common health conditions specific to the breed. For Cavaliers, that includes OFA certifications for hearts and knees, and genetic testing for conditions like Episodic Falling (EF) and Curly Coat/Dry Eye Syndrome (CKCID).

If your breeder casually shrugs off health testing or gives vague answers, then that’s a big red flag. A good breeder will happily show you test results, explain what they mean, and take pride in producing pups that are adorable and healthy.

Socialization Starts from Day One

Your Cavalier puppy should come from a home, not a kennel. These affectionate dogs thrive on human interaction, and the best breeders make sure their puppies are well-loved and socialized from birth. After all, socialization plays a big role in shaping your dog’s temperament. A reputable breeder knows this and works hard to properly raise their pups before finding them a trustworthy home.

Transparency and Support

A great breeder isn’t shy about where their puppies come from; in fact, they should be eager to show you the puppy’s parents (and often the grandparents too). Many will proudly mention champion bloodlines, offer AKC limited registration, and provide a clear health guarantee.

Expect to be asked lots of questions too. Responsible breeders care just as much about where their puppies are going as you do about where they’re coming from. They want to make sure it’s the right fit for both of you, and that’s a very good sign.
